Washington DC continuing education (CE) requirements:

With the goal of enhancing the protection and promotion of public health and in accordance with the rulemaking authority under D.C. Offical Code #3-1203.02(12), the director has promulgated rules requiring licensed health professinoals to complete at least 10% of their required total of continuing education in the public heatlh priorities of the District as deteremined and published every 5 years or less frequently as deemed appropriate. The following topics have ebeen identified as key public health priorities:

1. Responsible opioid prescribing and effective pain management;
2. Nutrition and obesity prevention;
3. Identifying and reporting abuse (child and adult), neglect (child and adult), human trafficking, and domestic violence;
4. Sexual health (including taking sexual history, discussing sexual experiences with patients, sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV/AIDS), HPV vaccines, connections to cancer, latent tuberculosis, safe sex, and birth control);
5. Ethics and appropriate patient interactions (i.e. boundaries, patient privacy, and communications including telehealth);
6. Smoking, vaping, and tobacco (including dangers, smoking cessation, and non-smoke tobacco products);
7. Preparing your patients for an emergency and handling vulnerable populations in an emergency}
8. Identifying impairment (physical or mental) in patients and providers (including complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act);
9. Vaccinations (including legal requirements and appropriate exemptions); and,
10. Implicit bias, cultural competence and Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in health and health care.



Psychologists

Washington DC Board of Psychology  
CE Required: 30 hours every 2 years 
Online CE Allowed: 15 hours (15 hours must be live)
License Expiration: 12/31, odd years 
National Accreditation Accepted: APA, NBCC
Notes: 3 hours in ethics and 2 hours in LGBTQ required each renewal

CE Required: 40 hours every 2 years 
Online CE Allowed: No limit 
License Expiration: 12/31, even years 
National Accreditation Accepted: NBCC 
Notes: 6 hrs ethics & 4 hrs trauma counseling required each renewal

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs)

The DC Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology 
CE Required: 20 hours, every 2 years 
Online CE Allowed: No limit
License Expiration: 12/31, even years
National Accreditation Accepted: ASHA - Professional Development Resources is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA Provider #AAUM) to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology.
Notes: 1 hour in ethics required each renewal; 2 hrs LGBTQ; 5 hours in each of the audiology & SLP disciplines

Notes: 6 hrs ethics (must be live), 2 hrs LGBTQ & 4 hrs public health priorites req'd each renewal. HIV is no longer req'd. Please be advised that the live/in-person CE requirement has been suspended for this 2023 renewal period.
