Learning Level: Introductory

Course Type: Online

Course Abstract

Reading Comprehension is a 4-hour online continuing education (CE) course that discusses the latest research to help children develop strong reading comprehension skills.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are uniquely positioned to address reading comprehension for students. Their language expertise makes them well-suited to help improve children’s reading abilities (Catts & Kamhi, 2017). The comprehension of spoken and written language and the ability to coherently express ideas are intrinsically linked to reading comprehension skills (Wallach & Ocampo, 2017).

The course provides explicit strategies for teaching vocabulary and sentence structure, building background information, visualization skills, and boosting working memory. The course also provides information on metacognition, inference, prediction, and summarizing, as well as the use of graphic organizers, discussion, and digital literacy for teaching the main idea. This includes defining reading comprehension, outlining reading disorders, and reviewing assessment guidelines for reading comprehension disorders. The techniques outlined may be used across a variety of settings and to support children aged 6 months to 15-years old.

Ultimately, it is hoped that as children learn strategies for comprehending text, they will also develop a love of reading that lasts a lifetime.
