Course Abstract

Ethics for Texas LPCs is a 2-hour online continuing education (CE) course that provides Texas-specific ethical information for renewal of Texas licensed professional counselors (LPCs).

This course is intended to provide two (of the required six) hours of ethics for license renewal of Texas LPCs. Completion of the Jurisprudence exam will count as 1 hour of ethics and is required each renewal.

Content of this course will include relevant excerpts from the Texas Administrative Code Part 30, Chapter 681 and various other rules relating to the licensing and regulation of professional counselors in the State of Texas, along with discussion and interpretive commentary regarding ethics and law. Emphasis is on those issues most important for practicing professional counselors in delivering ethical, legal, and competent professional services while attending to prudent risk management practices.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify titles, definitions, and regulated activities of Texas LPCs
2. List the essentials of Texas laws and ethics concerning privacy and confidentiality
3. Summarize those actions that constitute sexual misconduct and the related disciplinary actions
4. Identify situations in which the disclosure of confidential information is authorized
5. Specify the circumstances under which reporting of abuse is mandatory
6. List circumstances under which the board or complaints committee may suspend a license on an emergency basis
